Identifying which Process Locking a File in Environment

Question:
VectorCAST indicates that a process is holding up the rebuilding of my environment. How do I determine what process is running in the background that has the environment locked?
Answer:

The best way to troubleshoot this is to use Windows Process Explorer.

  • If you download and run this, you can just point it at the environment directory and it will tell you what process is locking the files in the environment.
  • When you run that tool just go to the Find | File Handle or DLL menu and then type the directory path to the environment directory (it's odd that there is not a browse button), then click Search

  • Process explorer will show you all of the processes with something open in the entered directory.
