XL Hardware Support by CANoe and CANalyzer

CANoe/CANalyzer supports two hardware families:

  • XL hardware; available since 2004
  • VN hardware; available since 2012

From CANalyzer/CANoe version 15.0 there will be no more support for XL hardware.

This applies for the follwing products:

  • CANcardXL
  • CANcardXLe
  • CANcaseXL (log)
  • CANboardXL PCI
  • CANboard PCIe
  • CANboard PXI

If you’re using such hardware, a warning will appear in the Write window (from CANoe/CANalyzer 12.0) to contact Vector for an adequate solution.See the below tables which VN interfaces could be appropriate:

Background:

Technological reasons enforce this step. The aged hardware is controller based (SJA 1000) and does not allow to support various features of CANoe and CANalyzer (details below). There is no FPGA solution available to compensate for this. Furthermore the implementation of new features in CANoe and CAnalyze is inhibited through the increased efforts from supporting XL hardware.

The following features that are not supported by XL hardware but by VN hardware:

CAN features

  • CAN FD and upcoming CAN variants
  • Start Of Frame (SOF) timestamps (required by many analysis features e.g. bus statistics)
  • Extended error frame information (e.g. about possible cause of error frame)
  • Self acknowledgement (no extra CAN channel needed for ACK)
  • Simple bus_off disturbance CAPL function (canConfigureBusOff)

LIN features

  • Hardware LIN Master scheduler
  • Slave conformance tests (not fully supported, resolution not sufficient for all test cases)
  • LIN stress features limited to one channel per device

Additional features

  • DAIO: Only available for CANcardXL and CANcardXLe
  • Sensor protocols: SENT and upcoming protocols
  • Diagnostics protocols: K-Line
